Congressman Ben Chandler applauded a proposal to fund commercial carbon capture and storage demostration proposals. Below is Congressman Chandler's complete statement:
“I applaud the president’s announcement, which is a good start in using technology to capture carbon. As we will need coal in the coming years, I think it is so important to look at ways to burn coal more cleanly and efficiently. In fact, I just joined a bipartisan letter with the Kentucky delegation supporting a power plant in Henderson County which will produce electricity by converting coal to synthetic natural gas. This facility would produce next to no mercury emissions and would capture up to 75% of its carbon dioxide emissions. I also helped secure $60 billion dollars in the energy bill for clean coal technology.
Because coal is an important resource in Kentucky, I support efforts to continue to find ways to burn it more cleanly and efficiently."
